What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals composed of extremely thin fibers. Because it’s so thin, asbestos is extremely durable to abrasion, heat, and wear and tear. Unfortunately, it’s thin nature allows asbestos fibers to remain airborne for days, creating a hazard for individuals who inhale the fiber particulate. Until the 1970s, asbestos was widely used in the construction, shipbuilding, and automotive industries.
Where Can Asbestos Be Found?
Although asbestos has been removed from many building materials, it was formerly used in the following items: Boilers and gaskets, Pipe insulation and fittings, Floor tile and glue, Drywall and plaster, ceiling tiles and popcorn ceilings, and many others. Many of these materials are still present in buildings that were built before 1975.
